Is It Acceptable to Wear Lingerie in Public?

Lingerie has always been considered “night-time wear,” the kind of outfit you throw on to impress your significant other, but is it now socially acceptable to wear lingerie in public?

Stores such as Victoria’s Secret and Forever 21 have been advertising slips as everyday wear. According to them, slips are just another dress trend. And this trend can even be found under the dress category on the Forever 21 website, right next to a conservative maxi dress. And while I am all for wearing what you want to wear and what make you feel confident, I’m not sure I can get on board with this trend.

It’s silk, the slip that is. The silky material just spells out luxurious to me, and I don’t consider luxurious clothing as everyday wear. Keep in mind this is coming from a jeans and T-shirt type of girl.

Victoria Secret has a category called “The Slip Shop” which weirdly sounds very elegant. Under this shop, VS has separated the slips based on occasion, “Day: Show it off, Night: Wear it out, and Late Night: Heat Things Up”. And as you can probably guess, the most risqué, revealing slips fall under the later section, as well as the highest price range. But even the slips that fall under “Day: Show it off” are a little too “showy-showy” for my taste.

The see-through material of the VS slips leaves nothing to the imagination and if that’s the kind of look you are going for, than go for it, I just advise you to be cautious of what you wear underneath.

Some girls have been wearing slips the “90s way” meaning pairing a t-shirt underneath. Wearing a T-shirt under the slip can help make the “dress” more appropriate as well as more casual, but I just don’t like the look of that. I get the point of wearing a white tee under the slip, I understand it’s to make this piece more wearable, but in the same breathe it’s a very dated look. People used to wear shirts under dresses in the 90’s and while dressing in 90’s fashion has been insanely popular, I just can’t get behind this trend.

So is it acceptable to wear lingerie outside? I say it’s not.
