Early 2000s Trends’ Comeback in Fashion

Many fashion trends we’ve seen in the early 2000s are making a comeback now in the year 2020. Is it just another phase or is it here to stay?

There have been several iconic clothing styles throughout the decades. Many fashion statements have become trends. The early 2000s was a different and iconic era especially in women’s fashion. There were fashion don’ts that thankfully have not, and will probably never come back in style. However, there are a few styles that have made its way back. During this era women were making bold statements with their clothing as a means of self expression in conjunction with their personalities.

Many of the clothing styles young women and teens wore were influenced by Hollywood celebrities according to what they were wearing in movies, television, and to events. This is still relevant today. I was born in 1997, therefore I didn’t get a change to appreciate and participate in these trends, but fortunately now I can. Being that some celebrities are changing their style and aesthetic now, lately many of the clothing stores young women and teens shop in are bringing back those same styles. According to FashionSchoolDaily.com, “It seems the industry is simultaneously exploring and avoiding the focus on individual expression, so it is no surprise that designers are bringing back some trends that had a love/hate relationship with fashion.” Even though stores showcase many of these trends on display, already styled in early 2000s fashion, there’s other ways you can express yourself through your style with a few of these items, and some articles of clothing you already have.

For example, mini skirts, especially plaid skirts, are really big right now. It’s more of a preppy look. This was a style of clothing worn by the main characters, “The Plastics” shown in the classic movie Mean Girls. To style, you could pair this with a sweatshirt, or with a collared shirt underneath.

Another look that is really cute are the jumper dresses. There’s a wide range of variety when it comes to styling these. They come in plaid, checkered, denim, corduroy, and other designs as well. Miley Cyrus used to wear these often on and off the show Hannah Montana. A cute way to style this is to pair it with a turtleneck top underneath or a simple T-shirt underneath to make it more casual. A cute beret would go perfectly with an outfit like this.

Flare and bootcut denim jeans are making its way back into mainstream style. Usually for the past decade we’ve been so accustomed to skinny jeans or straight bottom jeans. Flare and bootcut jeans were worn by plenty of celebrities. Jessica Alba even wore a pair to a red carpet event in the early 2000s. For 2020, these jeans look nice styled with an off the shoulder top or a cross-wrap shirt.

Lastly, this last style has to be the most anticipated comeback of them all; velour sweatsuits. These are so comfortable, casual and cute. You do not have to style this with anything because it is a matching set. You can add a shirt underneath if you want to wear the top sweater unzipped. These have been seen in the iconic movie The Cheetah Girls.

Trends and styles will always change throughout the times and years to come in the fashion industry. The fashion world tries to dictate and determine what style is considered trendy and lets celebrities influence consumers in society. I believe it is nice to have the option to be able to refer to different trends, however I think it’s great that everyone has a right to their own individual expression and can obtain their own style.
