Amazon announced they are launching a flying security camera drone in the near future. This drone is a product of its creator, RING – Ring Always Home Camera. This can fly around one’s home to record disturbances when the resident is away.

Set to be released and available in 2021, this security camera is connected to a series of sensors in the home. This is designed to automatically fly to predetermined areas in the residence if one of the sensors is triggered by a break in. If this were to occur, the owner will receive a smartphone notification alert with live footage of the incident. Amazon says, “On board obstacle avoidance technology keeps it from flying into unexpected items. It will return to dock and notify the owner if it encounters a problem.” This product will cost $250.

Once the camera learns its route, the drone can fly up to five minutes before it has to recharge. When not using the security drone, it fits inside of a chargeable cubic doc until it is activated. This product does not record while charging. Once charged, the drone will fly to its pre-set path. This product cannot be controlled manually, it can only fly to where it is programmed to. The engine is designed to hum loudly if it is in the same room and/or interference with a human.

According to Ring founder, Jamie Siminoff says, “Something frequently I hear from customers is ‘I have a few indoor cams from Ring but sometimes I would leave the house and couldn’t remember if I’d left a window open and wished I had a camera there’.” He also stated, “We wanted to create one camera that could give users the flexibility of every viewpoint they want around the home, while delivering on our founding principles of privacy and security.”

Many of us may have similar comments and concerns when it comes to considering purchasing this item. Some may feel this is a bit over the top or unnecessary, however there may be some who completely trust a product such as this one and will purchase for security of their home.

According to Securitymagazine.com, “Cybercriminals are already maximizing the opportunity to exploit vulnerabilities in a smart home device as a stepping stone to target the network on which these devices are installed.” I also believe this will allow hackers to be able to access confidential information or there will be a loophole for an invasion of privacy. Emma Bickerstaffe, Senior Research Analyst for Information Security Forum says, “Now that much of the world is currently working from home, smart home devices play even more to the advantage of cyber attackers, presenting an attractive way for adversaries to access and compromise valuable business information.” I believe this product is very innovative but I definitely agree with her statement. I personally would be hesitant on purchasing this item due to this reason, however overall this is a great product one could obtain in the home for security.
