For the past few weeks, NBA players have been seen in the media, expressing their opinions towards the NBA on their decision to hold an All-Star weekend this year. Many do not agree with having an All-Star weekend.
NBA superstars Lebron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Carmelo Anthony, and Kawhi Leonard are a few that have shined light on the topic, believing that the NBA is choosing money over players’ health.
Leonard is a strong believer that the NBA would rather receive money from the big event than worry about the health risks that come with it. When speaking with NBC Sports, He stated, “It’s money on the line. It’s an opportunity to make more money. Just putting money over health right now, pretty much.”
After what all players have been through, they feel as though they are deserving of a break. A break from the madness that was supposed to happen instead of having an All-Star Weekend. From being forced to play in the bubble away from their families for months, to jumping right back into the regular season after the bubble was over. Players have not had a break.
Portland Trailblazers forward Carmelo Anthony was interviewed by NBC Sports Northwest, where he shed light on the situation and discussed whether the weekend would be good for players. “I don’t think it’s right. I don’t think that we need it right now. It’ll be good to recognize those who got chosen to be an All-Star. I think that they deserve that recognition, but I just think that it’s a little bit too much in a short period of time.”
Sacramento Kings Guard, De’Aaron Fox called the idea of having All-Star Weekend “stupid.” Later stating, “money makes the world go round.”
Describing it as being a “slap in the face,” Lebron James voiced his opinion about the NBA’s decision during a postgame interview. When asked if he would attend the event, James said he would attend and play if he is chosen, but he does not really want to be there. In his own words, “I have zero energy. Zero excitement about an All-Star game this year.”
The NBA All-Star Weekend is definitely a money maker for the NBA. With the league missing out around 40% of its revenue due to not having fans attend games, All-Star Weekend is the time to help the league, as well as other companies involved generate revenue. The entire weekend consists of nonstop marketing. The league would be taking a huge loss if they did not have the event.
During a pandemic season that has seen many setbacks, conflicts, and difficulties, All-Star Weekend will just be another checkpoint for the NBA’s pandemic roller coaster.
The event is scheduled to be held March 7, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia. Coverage begins at 5pm ET on TNT.
