Looking to get into dating? The Hulu original movie, Fresh, released a couple weeks ago  just might change your mind. This film, starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones as two people who meet one another in a supermarket and fall in love, looks like it’s set to be a nice romantic film in its first 30 minutes…and, then, completely turns into something else entirely. There isn’t even an opening credits sequence until about a half-hour in, which is really clever and innovative. It lets you know that the true film doesn’t start until then, and, in a way, that is very accurate. The movie plays out like a romantic comedy in the first half-hour, but, the rest of the way, it is very clear that it is anything but.

If you want a description of what this movie is like, think of a combination of Get Out and Misery, minus the social commentary on race, and add in cannibalism. Yeah, that kind of film! Director Mimi Cave gives us a thoroughly original commentary on dating, and God bless every second of it!

You won’t find this kind of movie anywhere else, but that’s what makes it even more worth watching. Edgar-Jones and Stan give really great performances, as the former gives a compelling and convincing turn as a girl in peril, and the latter gives us a character that goes from charming and likable to completely bat-shit crazy. In other words, his performance perfectly matches the tone of the film.

Also, I’m not sure if I’m in the minority here, but I also really enjoyed the scenes of Noa (the main character)’s friend, Mollie, trying to figure out what happened to her. Just like Get Out, it gives us a likable side character who doesn’t become annoying, but, rather, is just concerned, and, genuinely, a really good friend. The twists that played out in these scenes also shocked the hell out of me.            Then, that BONKERS conclusion! Without giving anything away, the final 20 minutes of this movie go off-the-walls insane, and are sure to let you know that, from here on out, there is NO going back. And, that’s part of what makes it so entertaining! It’s very akin to, once again, the ending to Get Out, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s still a really entertaining finale that doesn’t take away, but, rather, adds to an entertaining movie. At the end of the day, this film will not be for everyone, but, if you’re the kind of person who likes to watch something original that doesn’t give a damn who it may turn off or offend, Fresh will definitely be your cup of tea.
