What you will need:

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of evaporated milk
  • 1 can of sweet condensed milk
  • Whipping cream
  • Sugar
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Yellow cake box mix
  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil

Tres leches is my favorite dessert learned by my grandmother on my father’s side. It’s so sweet and moist, and this recipe is very easy.

First, you want to bake the cake. You put the yellow cake mix, along with eggs, water and oil in a bowl. It depends on what brand you use, but all cake brands have different measures so make sure that you follow that specific brand’s instructions. You will then put it inside the oven followed by the instructions on the box as well. Usually it goes from 350 to 400 degrees to bake. Let it bake for at least twenty minutes or until you see the cake browning.

Now you want to make the liquid mixture to pour into your yellow cake. You will put a cup of milk inside a big bowl, a cup of evaporated milk, and a can of sweet condensed milk. I personally put a little dash of vanilla essence inside the mix just for a little pop, as it makes a tiny difference but either way it’s still going to be sweet. Now just mix, mix and mix until it’s all evened out.

The cake should now be ready to take out the oven. Take it out and let it cool for twenty minutes. After it cools off, cut around the edges so there’s no crusting. After that is done, you need to poke a lot of holes in the cake so the liquid can saturate when it is poured over the cake. Once you make all your holes and you feel good about them, POUR ALL THE LIQUID! I feel like pouring the liquid is the best part because the cake looks so moist.

Here’s the catch, it’s better to pour the liquid into the cake and cover it and let it sit inside the fridge for a few hours, this way so the cake can sit and let the liquid marinate inside the cake. While the cake is in the fridge, whip up your whipping cream with a blender along with sugar and vanilla added. It should be a thick consistency so it can be a topping for the cake.

Don’t be like me and be impatient, if the cake is still hot the whipping cream will melt. After this is done, slice the strawberries for the topping. After a few hours, you may now take out the cake, spread the thick whipping cream on top and place your sliced strawberries on the cake how you like, and there you have a homemade tres leches cake!
