On April 17, 2023, the American Studies/Media and Communications department at SUNY Old Westbury held an event that featured a Class of 2020 alumni, Marvin Argueta. Argueta now works at ESPN as a production assistant. He came to talk about the importance of using student media outlets on campus in order to prepare for a job post-graduation.

Argueta is a child to immigrant parents who are from Argentina and has been watching sports for as long as he can remember. He remembers watching the New York Giants defeat the undefeated New England Patriots back in 2008, and watching Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Boston Celtics the same year as well. He would also watch soccer games on ESPN in both English and Spanish. He would watch sports whenever he could and this is how his love for sports began.

When Argueta came to Old Westbury, he joined the radio station where he had a show where he would talk all about sports. He was also a part of OWTV during his time at Old Westbury and had a show surrounding the sports teams on campus. Marvin had an internship at SiriusXM NBA radio during the spring of 2020, but it was unfortunately cut short due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While he is working as a production assistant at ESPN, Argueta is currently attending Quinnipiac University getting his masters for sports journalism.

During his talk, Marvin Argeuta shared some really good advice to those who were attending the event. He first stated that networking and building connections with professors at school, other students, and coworkers is essential in order for you to land a job in the media field post-graduation. He also mentioned to include your best work in your portfolio so that future employers can see what work you have done, whether it was at school clubs or at internships.

The event was very successful as many students and some professors that are a part of the American Studies/Media and Communications department attended. Refreshments were served to all that attended.
