SUNY Old Westbury launched their homecoming festivities with an amazing kickoff event. On Wednesday, September 27, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Old Westbury hosted their annual Homecoming Kickoff Lunch event in the Campus Center.

Entering the event, you could feel the school spirit throughout the building. There were banners, balloons with the school colors, and music that was present throughout each floor in the Campus Center. With many students in attendance, there were also many faculty members, including professors, advisors, deans, and the school mascot who showed their school spirit.

The atmosphere was energetic and welcoming, with many of the sports teams, homecoming court members, and cheerleaders showing their school pride in their uniforms, jerseys, and sashes.

During the event there were many activities to participate in. People took part in games of badminton on the Campus Center Meadow Terrace, face-painting, eating, taking pictures in front of an Old Westbury backdrop by photographers, and dancing. When speaking to some students, many exclaimed that this has been the best homecoming they’ve experienced so far in their school years at Old Westbury.

One participant, Kayla, who is currently in her junior year, said, “compared to the other years, this kickoff is livelier. There are more people coming out to show support and it’s good to see more school pride in everyone.”

Many people were lined up for food at different stations, where they served “Walking Tacos,” Italian ices, and more. There was also a line for face painting where the artist had different options she painted on either cheek. Many people chose the school colors, flowers varying in different colors, and panthers representing the school’s mascot.

Olivia, who is a part of the homecoming court for 2023, said “the atmosphere is definitely fun. I got my face painted and it’s beautiful. I’m happy more people are starting to show out.”

There were also different banners posted around the event and entrances, displaying the different events to come throughout the week, along with the times and locations. This makes it easier for students to stay informed so they can participate in events to come for the rest of the week.
