SUNY Old Westbury has a newly renovated TV studio called the Media Innovation Center (MIC), located in the Campus Center G-wing. Not only can Media and Communication major students take part in the MIC space, but all students are welcome.

Professor Ozgur Akgun, also known as “Oz,” is in charge of the center. He helps and teaches students everything they need to know about media and TV production work. “I am personally very excited about the reopening of MIC as it offers many possibilities for our students,” he said.

The studio has an upgraded TV studio control room that has a lot of brand new technology. Also, it has upgraded to a professional LED lighting system and new 4K cameras. There is also a brand new check-out room where students can sign out video cameras, tripods, and microphones so they can use them for their projects and productions. In the spring, the new video editing classroom will be available.

Professor Oz explained that students have the ability to film and produce high-quality TV and video productions. He noted that they can take advantage of the studio where they can be creative, learn new skills, and collaborate with others. The studio opens new opportunities and ideas for students. They can add their skills and production work from the MIC to their portfolios.

Kayla Joseph, who is an intern at the MIC said, “Working at the MIC is fun. There’s a lot of cool and talented people here.” She said that she feels inspired when she is at the TV studio. Joseph explored the benefits of working at the MIC, saying that one benefit is “being able to build relationships with other people who are interested in working in the media.” She is mostly interested in the writing aspect of it all, but she thinks it’s important to try new things because anyone can develop new passions. What she hopes to get out of working at the MIC is the art of filmmaking and the building of new relationships.

Students have already been working at the studio since the beginning of this semester. Professor Oz said that the “Media Innovation Center is an interdisciplinary learning and production space for our students from a variety of backgrounds… We hope to see our students continue to bring their creative ideas to life while creating an inclusive community for all.”
