The New York Botanical Garden’s “The Orchid Show: Florals in Fashion” featured captivating floral displays curated by fashion designers that inspire and connect us to the natural world.

Florals in Fashion is a celebration of our natural world. This show made visitors appreciate the impact of women in fashion. The blending of colors, patterns, and styles utilizing plants and flowers emphasizes the complexity behind the design.

The exhibit immersed visitors into a world of vibrant floral arrangements with a fashionable twist. The show, which closes on April 21, included works by New York based designers: “Collina Strada” by Hillary Taymour, “Dauphinette” by Olivia Cheng, and “FLWR PSTL” by Kristen Alpaugh. These designers captured the essence and beauty of the star of the show–the orchid.

When patrons entered the observatory, they were met with rainforest warmth and elegantly placed vines, trees, and fountains. This led to the dazzling mannequins draped in fashionable flora.

One of my favorite installations was FLWR PSTL’s “Divine Nature” centerpiece. This autobiographical display refers to a “divine feminine figure.” The meticulously designed couture featured Vanda and Moth orchids and many others.

The “Rainforest Desert” section of the observatory gave patrons a chance to cool down as they glimpsed cacti and succulents under the observatory’s skylight.

The juxtaposition of delicate orchids against bold patterns, luxurious fabrics, and innovative design elements created a mesmerizing tableau that showcased the boundless creativity and ingenuity of both nature and fashion.

The garden is located in the Bronx and is accessible by subway or the Metro-North Harlem train, stopping directly at the Botanical Garden Station, just across the street from their campus. For students, children, seniors, and New York City residents, special pricing is available for passes that include access to the grounds, gift shop, and conservatory, as well as a tram tour that circles continuously around the garden.
